INTRODUCTION

  • Discipline is the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience.
  • If we consider it as a verb then it means training someone to follow a rigorous set of instructions and also punishing them and enforcing obedience.

Definitions of Discipline:

Types of Discipline in the Classroom

Classroom discipline refers to the strategies a teacher uses to manage student behavior and their attitudes during instructional time because discipline is a key component of effective classroom management.

It can be said that a teacher who uses consistent discipline strategies presents more effective classroom management than that of an inconsistent teacher. Though teachers usually develop their own styles of discipline for their classrooms, most discipline strategies can be categorized into three main styles or approaches which are given below (types of discipline):

1. Preventive Discipline:

Preventative discipline strategies create a safe, no confrontational classroom atmosphere. In this kind of atmosphere, students feel that they understand what is to come. Teachers who adopt effective classroom management strategies establish expectations, guidelines, and rules for the behavior of students during the first few days in the class. Students are explained which behavior is appropriate and what is not. Such explanations and guidelines might include rules regarding talking, homework, or language used in the classroom.

2. Supportive Discipline:

When a teacher offers a verbal warning or a suggestion for correcting behavior while a student is disobeying an established classroom rule, the teacher is using supportive discipline. Supportive discipline is distinct from punishment in that it provides a student with suggestions and options for correcting behavior before a consequence is necessary.

In this kind of discipline, the student is given the option to accept or avoid further punishment; the behavior has been redirected through a teacher’s supportive discipline strategy. Reminders, re-direction, and non-verbal communication are all examples of supportive discipline.

3. Corrective Discipline:

When a student has failed to redirect his/her behavior after repeated attempts at supportive discipline, a teacher may switch to a corrective discipline strategy. Corrective discipline refers to the set of outcomes brought to students following the violation. For example, engaging in a verbal altercation with a student is a corrective discipline technique but it may surge an uneasy situation and weaken the authority of a teacher or a leader.

Corrective discipline strategies should be adopted keeping in mind the age or the grade of the student. For example, scolding a student may be effective for kindergarten, but high school students are much less likely to be corrected with such strategies.

Component of corrective discipline strategies:

  • The discipline should be based on love, trust, and good-will as the fear-based discipline is temporary in nature.
  • This love should be for each other among school authorities like principals, teachers, and students. Generally, the sense of love develops trust and sets the foundation for good discipline.
  • The entire climate of a school can be made beautiful and coordinating just by maintaining discipline. Not only the teachers should be responsible for it but also the guardians and whole of society will have to take responsibility.
  • To maintain proper discipline, it is important to maintain co-operation within the school departments.
  • For the mental and emotional satisfaction of the students, some kind of creative activities should be started in the school or educational institution, So that students get busy learning and using their skills. In this case, there are fewer chances of problems of indiscipline.
  • The provision of punishment should not be used for maintaining discipline.
  • Punishing the students, (again and again) is not good. As a result, it creates various kinds of complexes in their minds. Which may also become the reason for the imbalance in their personalities. Hence, we should not punish them.
  • The pupils should be made aware of the importance of discipline.
  • Also, their guardians should adopt discipline at home as the child passes most of his time there only.
  • If parents fail to implement discipline at home then there would be the possibility of failure of good efforts made by the school.
  • Thus, making families aware of the importance of the discipline, the goal of discipline at schools or educational institutions can be achieved.
