Discipline is the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience.
If we consider it as a verb then it means training someone to follow a rigorous set of instructions and also punishing them and enforcing obedience.
For instance, ’military discipline’ refers to the drill in the use of weapons and strict obedience to military commands.
On the basis of the above clarifications, it can be said that the discipline is to be seen as a form of specific and rigorous scientific training that will turn out practitioners who have been ‘disciplined by their discipline’ for their own good.
Definitions of Discipline:
Bryan Turner has pointed at the ecclesiastical meaning, which refers to the order maintained in the church, and at the medical meaning of ‘discipline’ as a medical regimen imposed by a doctor on a patient to the patient’s benefit.
According to Michel Foucault, ‘discipline’ as a violent political force and practice that is brought to bear on individuals for producing ‘docile bodies’ and minds.
What is academic discipline?
The term ‘academic discipline’ certainly includes many components of the meaning of the term ‘discipline’ discussed above.
This term has also become a technical term for the organization of learning and the systematic production of new knowledge.
Many times discipline is identified as subjects taught in the institutions.
But clearly not every subject taught at institutions shall be termed as a discipline.
Meaning of Discipline in Educational Management
The word ‘Discipline’ has come from the Latin word “Disciplina” which means management, education, practice, rule, teaching, and trained condition, etc.
The word “Discipulum” means pupils.
Pupils should obey their teachers. With this, they will be able to develop necessary and required qualities in themselves for their successful lives.
It can also be said that the meaning of discipline is to create regularity in conduct.
Discipline is a mode of life in accordance with certain rules and regulations.
It is a kind of self-control that reflects public actions. No one force this control upon any individual. It comes out from within. It can also be said that discipline is spontaneous and not a mere submission to authority in an obedient manner.
The term ‘discipline’ also refers to a state of orderly conduct of an individual which is gained through training in self-control and in habits of obedience to socially approved standards of thought and action.
It means having a good understanding of the right conduct.
The formation of desirable habits and standards and adherence to such standards is just and necessary for a human being.
Modern Concept Discipline
The great educationist John Dewey has said that according to maximum modern thoughts, the meaning of discipline is to prepare children for life in a democratic society, to provide help to achieve knowledge, habits, strength, interest, and ideas which are important for the up-gradation of oneself, for his companies and whole of the society.
Today, where the objective of education is understood to develop qualities of successful citizenship and sociability in children.
At the same place, school discipline refers to internal and external discipline.
Under this, the development of physical, mental, social, and ethical values occurs.
In short, the modern concept of discipline is one in which self-discipline and social discipline are emphasized especially or particularly.
Importance of Discipline
A great philosopher Aristotle said, “A nation is not built by mountains and trees, for withstanding it is built by the character of its citizens.”
The statement given by Aristotle is completely true. It means that when the citizens of some country are in discipline, they would be capable of taking their country on the path of progress.
A disciplined person is of good character, and pious by the mind, by the above saying, we can understand that how crucial discipline is in our lives.
Discipline is the thing that decides our future actions and habits.
Through discipline, the only man can attain power and by this power, he becomes capable of developing his natural tendencies according to his personal viewpoint.
This fact can be made clear that a man, a nation, society, and personality of all can only be made great by discipline itself.
In the absence of discipline, man cannot utilize power properly given by nature.
Discipline in Educational Institutions
As we know that discipline is very important in every stage of life, the discipline in schools means, “Orders and system in doing things, regularity and obedience to commands.”
Discipline is supposed to be identified with orderly behavior in the classroom and other forms of school activities.
Outward shows of the order have to be a force of fear. That is not a real discipline. Real discipline implies persuasion while order implies compulsion.
It is important that school discipline (discipline in the educational institution) should be imposed for building up habits, self-control, cooperation, etc. not because it is imposed from above, but because of the necessity and values by the pupils themselves.
Types of Discipline in the Classroom
Classroom discipline refers to the strategies a teacher uses to manage student behavior and their attitudes during instructional time because discipline is a key component of effective classroom management.
It would not be wrong to say that a teacher who uses consistent discipline strategies presents more effective classroom management than that of an inconsistent teacher.
We can categorize discipline strategies into three main styles or approaches:
1. Preventive Discipline:
Preventative discipline strategies create a safe, no confrontational classroom atmosphere.
In this kind of atmosphere, students feel that they understand what is to come. Teachers who adopt effective classroom management strategies establish expectations, guidelines, and rules for the behavior of students during the first few days in the class.
Students have explained which behavior is appropriate and what is not.
Such explanations and guidelines might include rules regarding talking, homework, or language used in the classroom.
2. Supportive Discipline
When a teacher offers a verbal warning or a suggestion for correcting behavior while a student is disobeying an established classroom rule, the teacher is using supportive discipline.
Supportive discipline is distinct from punishment in that it provides a student with suggestions and options for correcting behavior before a consequence is necessary.
In this kind of discipline, the student is given the option to accept or avoid further punishment the behavior has been redirected through a teacher’s supportive discipline strategy. Reminders, re-direction, and non-verbal communication are all examples of supportive discipline.
3. Corrective Discipline
When a student has failed to redirect his/her behavior after repeated attempts at supportive discipline, a teacher may switch to a corrective discipline strategy.
Corrective discipline refers to the set of outcomes brought to students following the violation. For example, engaging in a verbal altercation with a student is a corrective discipline technique but it may surge an uneasy situation and weaken the authority of a teacher or a leader.
Corrective discipline strategies should be adopted keeping in mind the age or the grade of the student.
For example, scolding a student may be effective for kindergarten, but high school students are much less likely to be corrected with such strategies.
Component of corrective discipline strategies
The discipline should be based on love, trust, and good-will as the fear-based discipline is temporary in nature.
This love should be for each other among school authorities like principals, teachers, and students. Generally, the sense of love develops trust and sets the foundation for good discipline.
The entire climate of a school will be beautiful and coordinating just by maintaining discipline. Not only the teachers should be responsible for it but also the guardians and whole of society will have to take responsibility.
To maintain proper discipline, it is important to maintain co-operation within the school departments.
For the mental and emotional satisfaction of the students, some kind of creative activities should be started in the school or educational institution, So that students get busy learning and using their skills. In this case, there are fewer chances of problems of indiscipline.
The provision of punishment should not be used for maintaining discipline.
Punishing the students, (again and again) is not good. As a result, it creates various kinds of complexes in their minds. Which may also become the reason for the imbalance in their personalities. Hence, we should not punish them.
All the pupil should be aware about the importance of discipline.
Also, their guardians should adopt discipline at home as the child passes most of his time there only.
If parents fail to implement discipline at home then there would be the possibility of failure of good efforts made by the school.
Thus, making families aware of the importance of the discipline, the goal of discipline at schools or educational institutions can be achieved.
Discipline is very important for a better life. The importance of discipline is a subject of discussion with the children so that they can learn to balance their lives.
At the school level or educational institutions level discipline plays a very important role. How constructive a classroom is, totally depends on a teacher and the discipline strategies adopted by him.
In short, it can be said that if a person has discipline in his life, then educational goals, life goals, and other goals are easily achievable. With the help of this topic, we are able to understand Discipline, Its Types, And Its Importance.
