Bases of Curriculum

Education is very necessary for human life. In the absence of education, it will be impossible to call a human because without education man will become just like other living beings and he will face difficulties in being a social animal.

Education is a learning that lasts for a lifetime. Curriculum is resorted to transfer education properly. There are many bases of curriculum which are given below –

  1. Philosophical Base
  2. Psychological Base
  3. Sociological Base
  4. Historical Base
  5. Cultural Base
  6. Scientific Base

1. Philosophical Base (Bases of Curriculum)

As we know, almost all works or fields are incomplete without the involvement of the People. Similarly, the educational philosophy of people is directly involved in the process of curriculum development.

Philosophy determines the depth of the subject and its usefulness. Some of the definitions of philosophy are given below-

“Philosophy is a science which investigates the nature of being, as it.” ~ Aristotle

According to Russel – “Philosophy proper deals with matters of interest to the general educated public, and loses much of its value if only a few professionals can understand it.”

According to John Dewey – “Philosophy is not a panacea (remedy for all kinds of diseases/troubles) for the problems of men, but is that which emerges out of the methods employed by them to solve their problems.”

In the words of Marilyn Adams – “Philosophy is thinking really hard about the most important questions and trying to bring analytic clarity both to the questions and the answers.”

Based on the definitions of philosophy given above, it can be concluded that the nature of philosophy is scientific and it is related to the experiences of the people.

Philosophy is very useful in every aspect and it determines the goal of life. This goal is then achieved by the education. It also guides us about the instructional styles we should use to match children’s learning styles.

Philosophy teaches about the role that should be played by the school as an agent of society, and also the roles played by the teachers in the learning process.

Therefore this base of the curriculum plays important role in the curriculum development.

2. Psychological Base

Every curriculum is designed to fulfill the learners’ needs and during the construction of the curriculum, psychology helps in understanding the behavior of learners.

Behavior and the experiences of the learners play a very important role in curriculum construction. Through education psychology, useful efforts are made to bring desirable changes in the learners’ behavior.

According to Pilsbury– “Psychology may be most satisfactorily defined as the science of human behavior.”

Learners have different needs and they need to be identified before designing any kind of learning subject. The curriculum should consist of variety and elasticity which satisfies the individual differences, needs, and interests of the learners.

Based on the above we can say that the teachers and the experts take help of the human psychology to successfully design the curriculum and the psychological base is one of the important tools to design the curriculum.

3. Sociological Base

Human is a social animal and their development takes place in society. We all need each other or are dependent on one another for many kinds of work.

Social conciousness is the base of educational or psychological development and socialization.

Every society, or nation has an essential social obligation to arrange the education of children. The curriculum helps students learn social work, and social activities are also included in the curriculum to help students learn about their surroundings.

4. Historical Base

History is a story of the people and the species which ever lived or live on this planet. History helps us understand the old rituals, political institutions, monuments, and educational institutions.
