INTRODUCTION Climate encompasses the long-term patterns of weather conditions and fluctuations across a significant area, typically spanning more than thirty years. Weather, on the other hand, refers to the immediate atmospheric state within a specific region at a given moment. Both weather and climate are composed of various elements, including temperature, wind, atmospheric pressure, humidity, and precipitation. These factors contribute to the overall weather and climate experiences. Based on the monthly variations in atmospheric conditions, the year is divided into distinct seasons: – Winter – Summer – Rainy Seasons | P.T Will start the presentation and introduce the chapter. | Pupil will listen carefully. | |
Climatic Controls The climate of any place depends on the following factors: 1) Latitude The amount of solar energy received varies according to latitude due to the curvature of the earth. 2) Altitude As we go higher in altitude from the Earth’s surface, the atmosphere becomes less dense, and the temperature tends to decrease. Therefore, altitude plays a role in determining the climate of a place. 3) Pressure and wind system The pressure and wind systems in an area are influenced by both latitude and altitude. These factors contribute to the circulation of air and affect the climate patterns of a region. 4) Distance from the sea The sea has a moderating effect on the climate. Areas closer to the sea experience more stable and moderate temperatures compared to inland regions. As the distance from the sea increases, the moderating influence decreases, leading to more extreme weather conditions. This phenomenon is known as continentality. 5) Ocean currents Ocean currents, along with onshore winds, influence the climate of coastal areas. When warm or cold ocean currents flow past a coastal region, they can warm or cool the air, impacting the local climate. 6) Relief features The geographical features of an area, such as mountains, significantly influence the climate. Factors Affecting India’s Climate India’s climate is influenced by several factors that contribute to its diverse weather patterns. The main factors affecting India’s climate are: – Latitude – Altitude Pressure and Winds Pressure and Surface Winds: Variances in pressure systems and the direction of surface winds affect India’s climate. These systems contribute to the movement of air masses, influencing temperature and moisture levels across different regions. Upper-Air Circulation: The circulation patterns of upper-level winds, such as the jet stream, have an impact on India’s climate. These high-altitude winds can bring changes in temperature, moisture, and weather conditions. Western Cyclonic Disturbances and Tropical Cyclones: India experiences the influence of western cyclonic disturbances and tropical cyclones, particularly during certain seasons. These weather systems bring significant rainfall and can cause storms and cyclones, affecting the overall climate of specific regions. | The Indian Monsoon The climate of India is strongly influenced by monsoon winds. The seasonal reversal of the wind system is known as a “monsoon”. The monsoons are experienced in the tropical area roughly between 20° N and 20° S. The arrival of the Monsoon in different parts of India The monsoon arrives at the southern tip of the Indian peninsula generally by the 1st week of June. Subsequently, it proceeds into two– the Arabian Sea branch and the Bay of Bengal branch. – The Arabian Sea branch reaches Mumbai on approximately the 10th of June. – The Bay of Bengal branch arrives in Assam in the 1st week of June. – By the first week of July, western Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and eastern Rajasthan experience the monsoon. – By mid-July, the monsoon reaches Himachal Pradesh and the rest of the country. | P.T will explain the drainage system of lakes. | Students will note down the points. | |
