B.Ed Degree Eligibility Criteria

Universiries/colleges of different states have different sets of requirements (eligibility criteria) in order to apply for a B.Ed degree course; however, the general B.Ed eligibility criteria is the same for them all.

  • The student/candidate must be a graduate in any stream.
  • He/she should secure at least 50% marks in his/her graduation exam.
  • The candidates who belong to the reserved categories i.e. SC/ST/OBC/PWD have a relaxation of 5% marks in the minimum aggregate score required to apply for this course. This however depends on the college or state they are applying in.
  • Few colleges demand a minimum age of 19 years in order to apply for B.Ed degree course.

Types of B.Ed Degree

The B.Ed degree has been made compulsory by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), a body that is responsible for the training of teachers, for teaching students in government schools in India. Due to this there has been a massive surge in the demand for the B.Ed degree course in recent years.

This course has been modified in such a way that every candidate can pursue it. The Part-time and distance BEd courses can be pursued by working professionals as well.

The following are the types of B.Ed:

Full Time B.Ed (Regular B.Ed)

  • A full-time B.Ed degree or Regular B.Ed is 2 years professional course offered to candidates who want to pursue a career in teaching.
  • The majority of the candidates pursue a full-time/regular B.Ed course in which they learn plenty of things by working in groups.
  • Admission into the regular B.Ed course takes place following the entrance examinations conducted by different state agencies as well as universities. The most famous B.Ed entrance examinations are RIE CEE, DU BEd Entrance Exam, IPU CET, etc.
  • The average course fee, as mentioned earlier, ranges between INR 20,000 – INR 100,000
  • Many top B.Ed colleges/Universities in India provide admission to the full-time B.Ed course based on the Merit List.

Part Time B.Ed (Distance B.Ed or Non-attending)

  • A distance B.Ed degree is also 2 years professional degree but it is pursued from distance mode.
  • The candidates who are working and have to go for their jobs pursue a distance B.Ed course via only giving the practical files and exams.
  • Admission into the distance B.Ed course takes place directly or following an entrance examination conducted by a particular degree the candidate wants to opt for.
  • The average course fee is a bit more and can go upto INR 140,000
  • Many private B.Ed colleges have more than 100 seats for this program and they allow students to pursue this course.

Online B.Ed or Diploma/certificate

Online B.Ed courses are available as diplomas and certificate courses. The duration of the online course varies between a few hours to a few months. The following are the details of some online teaching course:

  • The admissions to the online B.Ed courses go on throughout the year and are done based on first come and first serve basis.
  • In some cases, there are deadlines too for batch admission.
  • The courses are offered by different online websites such as Upgrade, edX, Coursera, Alison, etc.
  • The fee of the online courses ranges between INR 3,500- INR 20,000. Some of the courses are even offered for free by some NGOs.
  • The online courses offered by Coursera are also free but if the candidate wants to get the certificate then they have to pay the due amount.
