10. ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE TOPIC

Well students! Today we are going to study an interesting topic, “The Fundamental Unit of Life”.

11. PRESENTATION OF THE TOPIC (Fundamental Unit Of Life)

Here is the presentation:

Subject MatterPupil Teacher’s ActivityPupil ActivitiesBlack-Board Work/ Teaching Aids

Cell

Cell is the structural and functional unit of life.

All living beings are made up of cell.
P.T Will start the presentation and explain the concept of cell.Pupil will listen carefully.

History of cell

Robert Hooke discovered cell in 1665.
Schleiden and Schwann gave cell theory in(1838-39)

In 1831, Robert Brown found a round body in the center of cell named as “Nucleus”.
P.T will tell the history of cell discovery.Students will note down the history of cell discovery.

Types of Cell
There are 2 types of cell-

1. Prokaryotic Cell:
Membrane bound cell organelles are absent here.

These are generally small in size.
Nuclear region is poorly defined.
Eg: Bacteria
P.T will explain the difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell.Students will note down each and every point and ask queries to the teacher.

2. Eukaryotic cell:

Membrane bound cell organelles are present here.

These are generally large in size.
Nuclear region is well defined.
Eg: Plant cell and Animal cell

Structural organization of a cell

1. Plasma membrane:
It is the outer covering of the cell and it is transparent.
P.T will explain all the components of a cell.

2. Cell wall:

It is hard covering, which is made up of cellulose.
It is present only in plant cell.

3. Nucleus:

It is the dense round body in the center of cell.
Genetic material (DNA or RNA)  is present in the nucleus.

Pupil teacher will dictate the content briefly.Students will see the charts clearly and try to understand the components of cell.

4. Cytoplasm:
It is the jelly like fluid substance filled in the cell and it is transparent.

5. Mitochondria:
It is known as the powerhouse of the cell.

The energy required for various chemical activities needed for life is released by mitochondria in the form of ATP.

6. Plastids: Present only in plant cell.
Their shape is round oval.

3 Types of plastids-
        i. Leucoplast
       ii. Chloroplast
     iii. Chromoplast

7. Vacuoles:

These are storage sacs for solid and liquid contents.

Vacuoles are small sized in animal cells.
Vacuoles are large sized in plant cells.
P.T will explain organelles present in Plant cell

1. Cell wall
2. Plasma membrane
3. Cytoplasm
4. Mitochondria
5. Plastids
6. ER
7. Golgi Apparatus
8. Ribosomes
9. Nucleus
10. Vacuole
Students will note down the points.

Students will see the charts and then try to relate the points with the chart.

8. Golgi  Apparatus:

These are flattened tubule and helps in process and packaging of proteins and lipid molecules.

9. Centrioles:

It is the dense central part found only in animal cells.

10. Centrosome:

It is an important part for cell division.
It is found only in animals.

11. Lysosomes:
Lysosomes are a kind of waste disposal system of the cell.
These are known as “suicide bags” of the cell.

12. Ribosomes:
They produce proteins from amino acid.

13. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER):

These look like tubules.
These are of 2 types-
        i. Rough ER
ii. Smooth ER
P.T will explain organelles present in Animal cell.
1.Plasma membrane
2.Cytoplasm
3.Mitochondria
4.ER
5.Golgi Apparatus
6.Ribosomes
7.Centrioles
8.Lysosomes
9.Nucleus
10.Centrosome

11. GENERALISATION

Well students, today we have learnt about cell, its history, structure and types.

12. RECAPITULATION

The pupil-teacher evaluates the students by asking some questions:

1. What do you mean by cell?

2. What are the common cell organelles of plant cell and animal cell?

State right (✔) or wrong (✘)

  1. Cell wall is present in Animal cell (    )
  2. Endoplasmic Reticulum are of two types (    )
  3. Plastids are present in plant cell  (    )
  4. Bacteria comes under Eukaryotes (    )

13. HOME WORK

  • Write a short note on cell history?
  • Tabulate the difference between prokaryotic cell and Eukaryotic cell?
  • Tabulate the difference between Plant cell and Animal cell?
  • Write short notes on Nucleus, Cytoplasm and Mitochondria?
