1. Bacteria Bacteria are single celled microorganisms. They are put under plant kingdom because they have rigid definite cell wall like plant cells. Bacteria can be seen under microscope which enlarges their image from a hundred to thousand times. Eg: Salmonella typhi, Leuconostoc mesenteroids 2. Fungi Fungi are non-green plants. They cannot synthesize their own food. They have to depend for their food on others. Most fungi take their food from dead organic matter. Some live on other organisms as parasites. Eg: Penicillium notatum Aspergillus niger | P.T will explain the different types of microorganism with examples | Students will note down each and every point and ask queries to the teacher. | |
3.Protozoa: Protozoa are unicellular animals. Some are free-living, others are parasites. Several parasitic protozoans cause diseases in human beings, domestic animals and plants. Eg: Paramecium, Plasmodium, a protozoan, causes malaria. | Students will see the charts clearly and try to understand the examples. | ||
4.Algae: Algae are green substances floating on the surface of a pond, lake, river, stagnant water, moist soil, stones. They tend to grow on wet surfaces. Therefore, they can synthesize their own food. They are found in water or in very moist places. Eg: Chlamydomonas, Cyanobacteria | Students will note down the points. | ||
5.Virus: Those microorganisms which reproduce only inside the cells of the host organism, which may be a bacterium, plant animal or human. Uses of Microorganisms 1.In Bakery: The bacterium, Lactobacillus promotes the formation of curd. It multiplies in milk and converts it into curd. · In making idlis and bhaturas. · In making of cheese, pickles. · In making of Bread, pav. 2.Commercial uses: · large scale production of alcohol, wine and acetic acid (vinegar). · Yeast is used for commercial production of alcohol and wine. · yeast is grown on natural sugars present in grains like barley, wheat, rice, crushed fruit juices, etc. 3.Medicinal uses: · Medicines kill or stop the growth of the disease-causing microorganisms. · Such medicines are called antibiotics. · antibiotics are being produced from bacteria and fungi. · Eg: Streptomycin, tetracycline and erythromycin 4.In making Vaccine: · Several diseases, including cholera, tuberculosis, smallpox and hepatitis can be prevented by vaccination. 5.Increasing soil fertility: · Some bacteria are able to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere to enrich soil with nitrogen and increase its fertility. · These microbes are commonly called biological nitrogen fixers. 6.Cleaning the Environment: · The wastes of plants, vegetables and fruits from nearby houses and gardens , put in a pit meant for waste disposal. Harmful Effects of Microorganisms Some of the microorganisms cause diseases in human beings, plants and animals. Such disease-causing microorganisms are called pathogens. Some microorganisms spoil food, clothing and leather. 1.Disease causing microorganisms: · Microbial diseases that can spread from an infected person to a healthy person through air, water, food or physical contact are called communicable diseases. · Examples of such diseases include cholera, common cold, chicken pox and tuberculosis. · Several microorganisms cause diseases in plants like wheat, rice, potato, sugarcane, orange, apple and others. 2.Food Poisoning: Food poisoning is a result of consumption of food spoiled by some microorganisms that produce substances that are toxic in nature and make the food poisonous and can cause serious illness to living organisms. Food Preservation– Microorganisms may grow on our food and spoil it. Spoiled food emits bad smell,bad taste and changes colour. | Students will note down each and every point. |
